One of the largest obstacles I have started to overcome in my life has been letting go and really forgiving the people of my past. I didn’t realise how much negative energy I was carrying around me until I began using this technique below.
For the first time in my life I felt like I was really letting go and moving past all these negative points of view I had been clinging to. Not only that, as I was writing I was also solving some questions I had about these negative thoughts and found ways to turn them into something new and positive for my life.
For example, in one of my writings I realised I spent so much time trying to please others I left little time to please myself. So now I make sure that I put myself top of that list because I now see that when I am happy I can make others happy much easier with minimal effort on my part leaving me feeling invigorated instead of drained.
So the technique…..
Write a letter to the person you have negative thoughts/feelings about
You must be totally honest when writing. Really let it all out! Don’t worry I’m not going to encourage you to post the letter. It is more a way of saying all the things you want to say but could never say it to their face.
Focus on one person at a time, as even if there were a group of people involved in the same situation their roles would have been different and your view of them too. You need to be specific to the individual.
You may find, as I did, that once you have got all the anger out on paper you may come to receive some clarity. It could be about why they acted in such a way or how you can channel this experience for something positive. Note these things down too. Maybe even say thank you!
Note: I jot down the positive feelings into a journal afterwards as well so that I can go back to them and work on them more
Burn the letters
Yes this may sounds a little extreme but let me elaborate.
Find a quiet space and light some candles. I put on some meditative music in the background to help create a relaxing mood.
Once calm I do some breathing exercises to help my body relax. My favourite is box breathing as shown in the diagram below.

Once relaxed I open my eyes and hold up each letter individually. I focus on the person the letter is to and notice any negative energies that are rising to the surface. I acknowledge them and let them go.
I then put the paper over the candle and set it on fire. Then place the burning letter into a container and watch it dissolve.
Forgive them
Whilst the letter is burning I say aloud “I forgive you (enter name)”
And keep repeating this until the letter has stopped burning.
By saying the words out loud you should feel that last part of negative energy held for that person lift off your shoulders. You may even feel like your body is lighter if it was a large enough burden.
Once you have completed the burning stay focused on your breathing and allow any new positive energies to fill your body and take residence in the parts that were previously filled with negative vibes. Let this positive energy soak into your soul and begin to smile. This new found light energy will help guide you to a much more fulfilling place in life I am sure of it.
